Cowboys’ Brian Schottenheimer makes ‘elated’ admission on having Joe Milton back

The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for the beginning of the 2026 NFL season. Dallas has made its final roster cuts, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer is refining the gameplan for Week 1. One player that remains with the organization following roster cuts is quarterback Joe Milton.

Milton has impressed fans and coaches alike with his incredible arm talent. He has not had a chance to play as a team’s true starting quarterback in the NFL. But Schottenheimer is certainly pleased to have someone like Milton in the organization.

“Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer is “elated” to have QB Joe Milton on the practice squad. ‘We’re thrilled to get him back. He’s gonna continue to get better,'” The Athletic’s Jon Machota reported on Thursday.

Milton was a sixth-round pick of the New England Patriots back in 2024. He impressed in the preseason that year, with many fans wondering what his potential in the NFL was. However, he managed to get into one regular-season game during his time with the Patriots.

In April 2025, New England traded Milton to the Cowboys. He did see more action in terms of games played with Dallas. He played in four games, though he started none of them. Still, those are valuable reps for any young quarterback.

Milton could certainly have gone to a new team after being waived at the end of August. However, he likes how things are going in Dallas. He signed back to the practice squad to the delight of Schottenheimer and this coaching staff.

The Cowboys will open the 2026 NFL season on September 13 against Jaxson Dart and the New York Giants.
