Premier League manager tipped to resign unless he gets more help from club with transfers

Eddie Howe could become Newcastle’s next high-profile departure – fans should fear a possible resignation.

That’s the view of ex-Tottenham and Sunderland striker Darren Bent, who has commented on the Magpies’ exodus of world-class talent this summer.

The 2025/26 season proved to Howe‘s worst campaign in charge of the Toon since succeeding Steve Bruce in November 2021.

Despite taking Newcastle to the Carabao Cup semi-finals and last-16 of the Champions League, his side ended up in 12th spot in the Premier League.

That is the lowest the club have finished since the 2021/21 term, with Howe managing to guide the Tyneside outfit to 11th when tasked with top-flight survival when he initially arrived.

Newcastle fans are now fearing another tough season awaits having parted ways with a number of club heroes.

Who has left Newcastle this summer?

Anthony Gordon was the first major sale of the window, as Barcelona forked out £70million to sign the England international.

And Sandro Tonali followed him out the door by joining Tottenham in a package deal worth £100m.

Experienced defender Kieran Trippier meanwhile was allowed to depart on a free transfer.

Now, club captain Bruno Guimaraes could be heading for a St James’ Park exit having agreed personal terms with Arsenal – informing Newcastle of his desire to leave.

For Bent, he believes things could go from bad to worse for the Geordie Boys should Howe not be backed by the board to bring in suitable replacements.

Speaking on the World Cup Gameday, co-host Andy Goldstein asked the question as to whether Newcastle are in danger of relegation.

To which Bent said: “It’s one of them for Newcastle, I would more fear for Newcastle with the Eddie Howe scenario.

“Because if I’m Eddie Howe – he’s not a miracle worker.

“But at some point, you need to help him financially to be able to get it over the line like he did with the League Cup [2025 triumph].

“So I just think, at one point, he might just go, ‘Do you know what? Enough. There’s no more I could do with this football club, enough’s enough.'”

Goldstein then posed the question whether it’s a real possibility that Howe could walk away from Newcastle.

Insisting he would leave a huge hole at the club, England legend Stuart Pearce remarked: “I sincerely hope not because I really like him as a manager, and I think that he’s a good fit at Newcastle.

“The fans have bought in with Eddie and I just like his management style, I really do.

“He’s not a self-publicist in any way, I think he’s very good at his trade.

“I think it will be a massive loss for Newcastle and Eddie, if they parted company.”

Who have Newcastle signed this summer?

Despite negativity from Newcastle fans surrounding their departures, they have splashed the cash to sign exciting, young talent.

Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has been snapped up from French club Reims in an £18m deal, while winger Bazoumana Toure has been brought in from Hoffenheim for £43m.

Midfielder Sean Steur was announced on Thursday in a £23m transfer from Ajax, while a £51.2m deal has been agreed to sign Freiburg star Johan Manzambi, who has scored three goals at the World Cup for Switzerland.
