Premier League club undergo demolition work to kickstart £150million stadium project

Crystal Palace have knocked down six houses in order to kickstart the redevelopment project of the main stand at Selhurst Park.

The club’s owner and chairman confirmed last December that the stadium will be transformed after they decided to stay at their current home in south London.

In order to begin, the Premier League club had to purchase houses from local residents and ensure they were rehoused.

The newly acquired land, which is now flattened, will initially be used to allow a clear entrance for construction to begin, providing safety for traffic and workers.

Once the main stand is finished, the land will return to form an access road and walkway for matchday fans.

Various work is underway during the summer, including the building of new changing rooms under the Holmesdale end.

This will include an upgrade for match officials and away teams upon their visit to Selhurst Park.

Palace are working in unison with Croydon Council after a deal was signed in 2024.

Price of progress

Since the layout of the original plans eight years ago, various setbacks have emerged, including the cost changing from £75million to £150million.

Additionally, the investment from New York Jets co-owner Woody Jones last June has also allowed plans to speed up.

Steve Parish‘s aim is to increase the 2026 Conference League champions home capacity from 26,000 to more that 34,000.

He talked to talkSPORT in October about the plans, he said: “Woody’s been brilliant.

“As a shareholder group, everybody’s completely aligned. This is something that has to happen for the football club.

When we went to Everton Stadium, which is amazing, hats off to them. They’ve done an amazing job.

“I thought that Goodison was a fantastic advantage for those guys. When you went and played, there was a real cauldron, a really difficult place to play.

“And I wouldn’t say [Hill Dickinson] it’s exactly as intimidating, but it’s pretty good for a big stadium. They’ve done a really good job.

“So, we need to do it. It’s an absolute must, and everybody now on the shareholder group is committed to doing it.

“So hopefully in January, there’s lots of things going on. Things are being moved, power stations, dressing rooms are being built.

“There’s a lot of things that maybe the fans can’t see, so it has been going forward.

“But the real physical things, things being demolished, etc., will start in January.”
