Ascot

Spartan Arrow

The Shergar Cup is a unique kind of competition hosted at Ascot for this meeting on Saturday.

It pits teams from Europe, Hong Kong, the Rest of the World and Great Britain and Ireland; starring Saffie Osborne as team captain, Ryan Moore and Dylan Browne McMonagle.

Horses forego their usual colours for their team colours making it red vs green vs yellow vs white vs navy blue with yellow sleeves.

This first race is wide open over 5f with a couple of the horses taking part never running over this distance before.

All Ways Glamorous appeals a lot for trainer’s form and course and distance form.

That horse is ridden by Shergar Cup regular Marie Velon, who has previously ridden for when there was a Ladies team in the Cup.

The French jockey has yet to win at Ascot though in the last five years and I’m drawn quite heavily to Spartan Arrow who has Moore on board.

That alone is enough to take a few bets on but more so for the fact this horse has previously reached a rating of 107 just last summer and is now down to a very dangerous weight.

He started this calendar year off at 104 and has since been dropped down to a mark of 97, 2lb lower than when going half a length off of Jm Jungle at Epsom in June 2025.

He’s not shown much this season but you’d have to think he can bounce back with this huge swing in the weights and really interesting with Moore on board.

Shrimp Shady

Suraj Narredu won the Stayers race last year on board Fireblade, Spirit Mixer went 5th a full four lengths behind the winner.

Spirit Mixer goes back in this year with Saffie Osborne on board this time but has been below par this season with only one placed effort and was fourth of five at San Siro in June.

One horse that fits the bill even without looking at the jockeys is the favourite Shrimp Shady.

Won three of four attempts on the turf and has thrived over this kind of trip, winning three of five since stepping up to 1m6f.

Only placed behind on the all-weather in tough handicaps and has handled each step up in the weights with each win, suggesting he’s really coping well and improving when asked.

Moore takes the reigns again so this one is a worthy favourite and a similar kind of horse to the usual winner to last years.

Red Spells Danger

The majority of horses in the 6f Shergar Cup Sprint are rated and weighted incredibly close together.

But Thunder Call is by far the biggest favourite for trainer William Haggas and jockey Jerry Chau.

Red Spells Danger was just behind Thunder Call at Newmarket in July and again at York in June when they pair came home 1st and 2nd in a field of 22.

Red Spells Danger was carrying 4lb more than the horse at York, but is now just 1lb heavier coming into this after they both were separated by just a head when there was a 2lb difference.

That consistency suggests that extra lb could be just enough to see Red Spells Danger come home as the value price at 5/1 under Saffie.

Sallaal

It’s the Betway Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock, the Group 3 looks promising with the 119-rated Sallaal the clear favourite ahead of Nahraan and other high-rated Group horses including the 117-rated Convergent.

There’s just five runners though and that bodes even better for Sallaal who has really stepped it up this season relishing the step up in trip to 1m2f.

The Frankel gelding has won five from nine runs on the turf and even beat Respond by over six lengths at Epsom in June, before then beating Persica at Sandown in July in the Gala Stakes.

Fallen Angel

Stepping back to a mile this serial winning-mare is sure to bounce back.

Wasn’t seen to great effect when tenth in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot in October.

And was then fourth of four in the Middleton Fillies’ Stakes at York, however this field is much weaker and this may do her confidence the world of good too.

This is a course she won at on her career debut and makes an interesting return as the clear favourite.

Graceful Song

Looks dangerous this filly by Dubawi who cruised home to win on debut.

Still favoured in the odds over a Royal Ascot Group 3 runner Nuit d’Eclair.

Could be anything and the Godolphin-owned, Charlie Appleby-trained and Billy Loughnane-ridden horses at Newmarket and in general have been absolutely flying recently.

Nuit d’Eclair is the form pick but it’s tricky to go against these unexposed fillies.
