Pistons rumors: Detroit committed to keeping Jalen Duren despite trade rumors
The Detroit Pistons appear determined to keep All-Star center Jalen Duren despite recent reports suggesting contract negotiations had opened the door to potential sign-and-trade scenarios.
Hours after reports surfaced that Duren was “underwhelmed” by Detroit’s initial offer in restricted free agency and planned to explore sign-and-trade options, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported Friday that the organization remains focused on reaching a long-term agreement with the 22-year-old center.
“Detroit Pistons are conveying that Jalen Duren will not be moved and are solely focused on coming to terms on an agreement to keep their All-Star center, league sources tell me,” Haynes wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Haynes’ report follows one from The Athletic’s Sam Amick, who reported Thursday that the gap between Duren and the Pistons in contract negotiations was significant enough for the former first-round pick to consider sign-and-trade possibilities once they become permitted.
The report sparked speculation that Detroit could explore blockbuster trade scenarios involving players such as Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown or Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard if negotiations with Duren continued to stall.

Subsequent reporting from Jake Fischer and Marc Stein indicated a Leonard pursuit has effectively cooled because the veteran forward reportedly would not sign a contract extension with Detroit if traded there. Brown, however, has continued to be mentioned as a potential sign-and-trade possibility should negotiations with Duren fail to produce an agreement.
Haynes’ latest update presents a different picture of Detroit’s intentions.
Rather than viewing Duren as a trade asset, the Pistons continue to prioritize keeping him as part of a young core that also includes Cade Cunningham and first-team All-Defense selection Ausar Thompson.
Detroit enters the offseason after a breakthrough 60-22 campaign that earned the franchise the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference before its playoff run ended in the second round against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
While negotiations with Duren remain ongoing, Haynes’ reporting suggests the Pistons have not wavered from their long-term vision. Instead, the organization appears intent on reaching common ground with its All-Star center rather than entertaining trade discussions.
