Phillies’ JT Realmuto pulled from Dodgers game with wrist injury
The Philadelphia Phillies trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Making matters worse is a worrying injury to catcher JT Realmuto.
The backstop was removed from the game after being hit by a pitch. Realmuto was ultimately diagnosed with a left wrist contusion and will now undergo further tests, via Lochlan March of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Once those tests come back, the Phillies will have a better understanding of where their catcher stands. They’ll hope he doesn’t require a long-term stint on the injured list. But Philadelphia will figure out their next plan of attack once his tests results are in. With Realmuto out, the Phillies are likely to turn to Rafael Marchan.
Heading into Sunday’s game, Realmuto was hitting .220 with two home runs, nine RBIs and a stolen bases. Those aren’t the numbers Philadelphia is looking for. Especially after signing the catcher to a $45 million extension.
Still, the Phillies are well aware of what Realmuto brings to the table. Over his eight years with the franchise, the backstop has hit .263 with 123 home runs, 443 RBIs and 74 stolen bases. Once healthy, Philadelphia is expecting him to play a crucial role in their lineup.
After a disastrous performance to start their season, the Phillies are now 30-28 on the year. Their playoff berth quest now seems reasonable. But at least in the short-term, Philadelphia will have to trudge along without their starting catcher. If Realmuto is forced to hit the injured list, the Phillies must continue battling to not fall into their old ways.
