The Philadelphia Phillies made multiple moves at the MLB trade deadline this season. Their most notable move was the trade for Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants. Philadelphia also acquired pitchers Brooks Raley and Caleb Kilian. Overall, it was a respectable trade deadline for the Phillies — but it was far from perfect.

The Phillies are a left-handed heavy offensive team, especially when it comes to the players who have performed well this season. Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Brandon Marsh have led the lineup and they all hit left-handed. Meanwhile, some of the Phillies notable right-handed hitters such as Trea Turner, Alec Bohm and JT Realmuto have all underperformed.

Philadelphia also needed another outfielder heading into the trade deadline. Instead, the team’s biggest acquisition was a left-handed hitting infielder. Arraez is one of the best contact hitters in the league and he will give the Phillies a boost, but Philadelphia failed to address its biggest need.

Now, Harper is expected to move to the outfield. The infield will be shuffled around, with Bohm potentially handling first base and Bryson Stott likely playing third base with Arraez at second base. The defense will have question marks given the setup, while the offense remains uncertain given the underperforming players and lack of a truly reliable right-handed bat in the lineup.

That remark should come as no disrespect to Turner, who was once considered to be one of the best players in all of baseball. The reality of the situation is that the shortstop has not played up to his expectations this season, though.

Will Phillies be able to overcome trade deadline mistake?

The Phillies have question marks. Their trade deadline mistake will lead to defensive uncertainty. Meanwhile, the offense may continue to be inconsistent. Philadelphia is currently 15th in runs scored, 21st in batting average and 20th in OPS. It’s not a terrible offense, but it also is far from the best lineup in the game.

So, will the Phillies be able to overcome their trade deadline mistake of not properly addressing their most pressing roster need? Well, it is possible, but the National League’s current scenario will make it a challenge.

The NL is much deeper than the American League at the moment. Of course, everyone knows the Los Angeles Dodgers are talented. Teams such as the Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs are all legitimate contenders as well. The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres should not be forgotten about either.

The Phillies’ uncertainty could prove to be an obstacle in the postseason. Their roster looks like a true playoff contender, but it does not appear to be a legitimate World Series contender. They could obviously upset expectations once the postseason begins, but the Dodgers, Brewers and Braves will all be able to give them serious trouble in the playoffs.

The pitching will need to be especially reliable in the postseason — which is realistic with Cristopher Sanchez and Zack Wheeler leading the starting rotation. And with Arraez in the lineup, Philadelphia’s offense has more balance. Schwarber and Harper will hit the ball out of the park, while Arraez can consistently put the ball in play and get on base.

The Phillies have questions as mentioned, but they are capable of playoff upsets.
