Chiefs’ Justin Fields gets 100% real on backing up Patrick Mahomes

As the Kansas City Chiefs continue training camp ahead of the 2026 NFL season, quarterback Justin Fields said backing up Patrick Mahomes has provided a valuable opportunity to learn one of the NFL’s most established offenses.

Speaking with Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith, Fields explained that Mahomes has taken an active role in helping him understand the Chiefs’ offensive system.

“Any question that I have, he’s been in this offense for 10 years now so he knows every little detail,” Fields said of Mahomes. “Any questions that have popped up, he’s explaining to me perfectly. It’s great learning from him, him showing me the ropes.”

Fields also discussed embracing the unfamiliar role of serving as Mahomes’ backup after spending most of his NFL career competing as a starter.

“I’m just trying to expand my horizon, do things I’ve never done before, the amount of concepts, the amount of actions, the amount of stuff we have in the offense,” Fields said. “I’m just trying to practice on that, and really emulate Pat.”

The former No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has experienced an eventful career since leaving the Chicago Bears following the 2023 season. Fields spent 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers before joining the New York Jets in 2025.

In nine games with the Jets last season, Fields completed 62.7% of his passes for 1,259 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception. He also added 383 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 71 carries.

Now with Kansas City, Fields enters a different chapter as he learns behind one of the league’s premier quarterbacks. His experience and athletic ability give the Chiefs an accomplished backup while allowing Fields to continue developing within head coach Andy Reid’s offense as the team prepares for another Super Bowl pursuit in 2026.
