Payton Tolle joins Boston history with career-high performance vs. Athletics

The Boston Red Sox capped off the week with a historic 13-1 win over the Athletics. Not only did they win their 9th straight and set a franchise record of 27 wins in their last 30 games, but their ace also made history of his own.

Left-hander Payton Tolle came away with a career-high 14 strikeouts and became the third rookie in franchise history to have multiple games with 11+ strikeouts, per ESPN Insights. The pitcher to do so was Roger Clemens in 1984.

By the 5th inning, Tolle achieved the feat when the Red Sox led 9-1. Altogether, Tolle pitched 6 innings and gave up only 2 hits and one earned run.

Tolle is 7-6 with a 3.20 ERA and 124 strikeouts. Last August, Tolle made history in his Red Sox debut with eight strikeouts in a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. From there, Tolle has become a stellar pitcher, putting up incredible numbers.

In April, he struck out 11 in his season debut against the New York Yankees in another 4-2 loss. Clemens set the precedent when he struck out 15 and walked zero against the Kansas City Royals in an 11-1 win on August 21, 1984.

The Red Sox are in the throes of a dramatic turnaround from the first half of the season. On June 24, they were standing at 32-46. After the All-Star break, Boston emassed a phenomenonal comeback that puts them in position for a shot at the playoffs.

Today, Boston is tied with the New York Yankees for second in the American League East Division at 64-51. They are also tied in the American League Wild Card standings.
