Guardians’ Chase DeLauter makes feelings clear on playing for Stephen Vogt

The Cleveland Guardians (57-59) recently dipped below .500 for the first time since May 5 and have slipped outside the playoff picture after losing 11 of their last 14 games. Franchise cornerstone Jose Ramirez is still nursing an injury and floundering in the batter’s box, the team ranks in the bottom-four in several offensive categories and even the bullpen is more vulnerable than usual. When taking a close look at all these areas of concern, it is easy to point fingers at the manager.

It does not appear that Stephen Vogt has lost the clubhouse, however. American League Rookie of the Month Chase DeLauter explained why the Guardians value the former All-Star catcher’s presence in the dugout so much.

“He’s a player, he knows the game well, he’s got feel, connects really well with us, and I feel like that’s what you really need in a manager,” the 24-year-old right fielder and designated hitter told Kevin Millar and Ryan Dempster on Friday’s edition of MLB Network’s “Intentional Talk.” “That’s what we like going forward.”

Vogt should be on DeLauter’s good side after he ripped into the umpire following a check-swing strikeout call in Wednesday’s 6-5 loss versus the New York Mets. The two-time AL Manager of the Year picked up his second career ejection for his loyalty. He is hoping that his fire will inspire the rest of the team.

Cleveland overcame a 15-and-a-half-game deficit to win the AL Central last season, and although the squad fell to the Detroit Tigers in the playoffs, that historic comeback highlighted the Stephen Vogt effect. He knows how to lead this group.

If Chase DeLauter can add to his impactful .279/.355/.440/.795 slash line, and Jose Ramirez and a couple of others ignite, then another Guardians summer resurgence could be coming.

Cleveland currently holds a 6-1 lead versus the first-place Chicago White Sox, so perhaps the Vogt magic has already begun.
