Watch Emmitt Smith, Thurman Thomas soak Roger Goodell for ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

The NFL has brought back the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money to find a cure for the deadly nerve disease. Players and teams have done their part, and now the league commissioner, Roger Goodell, is supporting the cause.

On Friday, Goodell, with the help of Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and Thurman Thomas, did his due diligence and had ice water poured over his head. As a result, the NFL Foundation will donate $500,000 to the Healey and AMG Center for ALS.

He then encouraged the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class to follow suit.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge took on a life of its own in 2014, when three men living with ALS started it. They were Pat Quinn, Pete Frates, and Anthony Senerchia. Each had buckets of ice water dumped over their heads and posted on social media. From there, the spectacle of people posting videos on social media of them getting dumped with buckets of ice water became a craze.

Athletes, celebrities, and average citizens posted videos. It raised $115 million for the ALS Association in America and $220 million globally.

Recently, it came back after Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson came forward with his ALS diagnosis.

ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It is a rare but vicious nerve disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Eventually, the afflicated lose the ability to move, speak, swallow, and breath.

The disease is also known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. It is in reference to the MLB Hall of Famer who was diagnosed in 1939.

Over 35,000 Americans battle ALS annually.
