Broncos DL suffers Achilles tear for 2nd straight season

Training camp is underway as the Denver Broncos prepare for the 2026-27 season, with hopes for an even deeper playoff run this year. While the postseason is still very much in play for the franchise, the team lost a depth defensive lineman for the upcoming campaign on Friday.

Reports indicate that Matt Henningsen tore his Achilles at practice, according to Mike Klis of 9News. This is the second straight offseason Henningsen has suffered this severe injury, as he tore his Achilles at about the same time last year.

Devastating news: Broncos DL Matt Henningsen suffered a torn Achilles today per source,” Klis reported. “It occurred one year after he tore his other Achilles during joint practice with 49ers in Santa Clara. All that rehab. All that work to come back. And Henningsen was having a good camp.”

The 27-year-old defensive lineman is a former sixth-round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft. His first two years in the NFL were rather successful, playing all 17 games in both regular seasons as a backup option. In 34 career games played for the Broncos, Matt Henningsen has recorded 40 combined tackles (18 solo), one sack, and two pass deflections.

The last time he took the field was in the 2023-24 campaign, as he spent the entire 2024-25 season on the practice squad. After suffering a second Achilles tear heading into the 2026-27 season, the former Wisconsin Badger will have to go through another year of rehab, having just completed one this offseason.

Denver will likely utilize a starting defensive line consisting of Malcolm Roach, DJ Jones, and Zach Allen in a 3-4 formation. Rookie Tyler Onyedim will be in the mix for playing time, while Eyioma Uwazurike and Sai’vion Jones work as backups. Jordan Jackson, Jordan Miller, and Kristian Williams round out the bottom of the roster at the d-line.
