Giants’ Matt Chapman expected to undergo surgery after latest injury update

The likelihood of Matt Chapman taking another swing in 2026 just took a huge blow. Following a month-plus stint on the injured list, the San Francisco Giants third baseman received brutal news. He has a hernia and a core muscle tear, which will probably require surgery, per the SF Chronicle’s Susan Slusser.

Many fans are wondering why such a diagnosis was not made earlier, but regardless of what preceded this unfortunate development, Chapman’s recovery just got even more arduous.

If he is indeed done for the year, the 2019 All-Star and five-time Gold Glove Award winner will head into the offseason with a .235 batting average, .324 on-base percentage, .368 slugging percentage and .692 OPS in 84 games. He has hit just seven home runs while posting a career-worst 45.4 ground ball percentage in 2026.

Chapman was one of several Giants players who were linked to trade rumors, but it never felt practical to deal him. Three-time World Series-winning catcher and current president of baseball operations Buster Posey has been a strong advocate for the multi-time Platinum Glover and probably does not wish to move him when his value is so low. A $151 million contract also creates a major obstacle (more than $100 million remaining on deal across the next four seasons).

All the Giants (48-67) and their fans can ask for now is a healthy and revitalized Matt Chapman in 2027. There are only 51 more days until this excruciating campaign ends for San Francisco.
