Giants HC John Harbaugh provides update after Cam Skattebo’s injury scare

New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo suffered an injury scare during training camp after colliding with linebacker Arvell Reese during practice. While it’s a situation the club is monitoring, it doesn’t sound like John Harbaugh is too concerned about it.

The 63-year-old head coach downplayed the injury completely when asked about it,” according to Darryl Slater of NJ.com. Harbaugh claims Skattebo is not dealing with a serious injury and that the former fourth-round pick is currently working his way back from the severe lower-body injury he suffered midway through last season. From the sounds of it, Cam Skattebo is going through the motions of his injury recovery.

“After Friday’s training camp practice, Giants coach John Harbaugh downplayed Cam Skattebo’s apparent injury while speaking to reporters in West Virginia,” Slater wrote. “Harbaugh said Skattebo isn’t dealing with anything serious — and is just continuing to work his way back from last year’s major ankle injury.”

“He’s probably working through the football shape part of it,” Harbaugh said about Skattebo. “He’s coming off of rehab, so that’s what that was. It won’t be a serious injury at all.”

Skattebo flashed major potential in his first eight career games in the NFL. At one point, he became the Giants’ go-to option in the offense before suffering an ankle dislocation, a fibula fracture, a tibia fracture, and a ruptured deltoid ligament in his right leg. The former Arizona State Sun Devil ended his rookie year with 410 rushing yards, 207 receiving yards, and seven total touchdowns (five rushing, two receiving).

Cam Skattebo is expected to be healthy by the Giants’ Week 1 home opener against the Dallas Cowboys in what will be a “Sunday Night Football” matchup. Tyrone Tracey is pegged as the immediate backup running back in New York.
