Padres make flurry of roster moves before Pirates clash

The San Diego Padres made three roster moves Monday before their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, adding outfielder Dustin Harris to the major league roster while sending infielder Sung-Mun Song to Triple-A El Paso.

The team made the announcement Monday afternoon on X, formerly Twitter.

San Diego selected Harris’ contract from El Paso and optioned Song in the corresponding active-roster move. The Padres also transferred right-hander Lucas Giolito to the 60-day injured list to clear a spot for Harris on the 40-man roster.

Harris, ranked as the Padres’ No. 29 prospect per Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors, earned the promotion after a productive stretch with El Paso. In 29 games since joining the Triple-A club, Harris hit .350 with a .422 on-base percentage and .617 slugging percentage across 135 plate appearances. He also hit six home runs while posting a 10.4% walk rate and 8.9% strikeout rate.

The 27-year-old has already spent time with multiple organizations this season. Harris began the year with the Chicago White Sox before being designated for assignment and claimed by the Houston Astros. After Houston also designated him for assignment, he returned to the White Sox before opting out of his minor league deal in July and signing with San Diego.

Harris has a career .225/.307/.371 slash line across 102 major league plate appearances.

His arrival gives the Padres another outfield option behind a starting group of Fernando Tatis Jr. in right field, Jackson Merrill in center and Luis Rengifo in left. Austin Hays and Jace Bowen are also available off the bench.

Giolito’s move to the 60-day IL is procedural. He has been sidelined with elbow inflammation since June 22 and has already missed more than 60 days, meaning the transaction does not delay his eligibility to return. He has yet to begin a rehab assignment.

The Padres face the Pirates at home Monday at 11:40 p.m. ET.
