Mariners rookie Colt Emerson’s season is sadly over after latest injury update

Colt Emerson was selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. Before making his MLB debut, Emerson signed a record-breaking extension with the club. The expectation was that he was set to be a cornerstone of the franchise.

It was a disappointing campaign for the rookie, and now the season has come to an end for Emerson, per Darragh McDonald.

Emerson is going to have season-ending surgery on his left wrist. He was sent to the minors out of spring training, but still got the extension from the team. He was finally promoted in May, making his debut against the San Diego Padres on May 17. The season did not go as planned for Emerson.

He hit just .190 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs. He struggled heavily in August, hitting .182 with a .206 on base percetnage. Emerson also was striking out on 34.4 percent of his plate appearances at the major league level. He also had just one home run and two RBIs during the month. The Mariners planned to demote Emerson back to Triple-A, but instead he was moved to the IL with wrist inflammation.

The Mariners are 62-69 on the season, which places them in third place in the AL West. While the team is seven games under .500 on the year, they are just three games out of first place in the division, sitting behind the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. The Rangers are also in control of the final wild card spot in the American League. The Mariners open a series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night.
