Tracy McGrady reveals why MVPs matter more than winning a championship

For Hall of Fame forward Tracy McGrady, winning an MVP award is more valuable for a player than an NBA championship. Ahead of the 2026-27 season, McGrady has been very vocal about his opinions.

McGrady, alongside Hall of Fame forward Vince Carter, explained why an MVP award matters more, per the Cousins with Vince Carter & Tracy McGrady podcast.

“The MVP of the regular season has more weight than a championship,” McGrady said. “Hell yeah, why wouldn’t it? Man, name the tenth or the eleventh player on the Chicago Bulls or the Los Angeles Lakers, or the Detroit Pistons, or the Boston Celtics. Who are they? Any of those teams, name me the eleventh or the twelfth guy.”

In McGrady agreeing with Houston Rockets All-Star Kevin Durant’s MVP take, Carter couldn’t name the various players at the end of the bench of championship teams such as the 2024 Boston Celtics, the 2020 Los Angeles Lakers, the 2004 Detroit Pistons, or the 1998 Chicago Bulls.

“You can’t even think of them. He got a ring, and he can’t even think of them,” McGrady added. “He has a ring, but does he have an MVP? Absolutely not. No. So, yes, the MVP of the regular season has more weight than a championship.”

For Tracy McGrady, an NBA championship takes more of a group effort from the team and the organization’s vision, whereas an MVP winner honors one individual rather than multiple people.
