Orioles’ Samuel Basallo seemingly avoids serious injury after scare vs. Blue Jays

A 6-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays could lead to a series split for the Baltimore Orioles. A five-run ninth inning, capped off by first baseman Pete Alonso’s winning run, has given the Orioles a shot at making up for losses in the first two matchups. During Saturday’s victory, catcher Samuel Basallo left in the top of the ninth following a strikeout. According to team beat reporter Jacob Calvin Meyer on X, formerly Twitter, Baltimore manager Craig Albernaz said Basallo should be okay.

“Craig Albernaz said Samuel Basallo should be OK,” Meyer posted post-game. “Basallo would have batted again in the ninth if his spot in the order came up. He’ll get checked out, but he should be OK.”

Basallo grabbed at his shoulder following the strikeout. The rising sophomore walked twice and singled before striking out to end his Saturday afternoon. The 21-year-old has split time with Adley Rutschman at catcher in addition to serving as the Orioles’ designated hitter. In 47 games this year, he’s already shown a world of improvement after last year’s 31-game stint at Camden Yards. A .276 batting average to go along with nine home runs and 24 RBI has proven that Basallo is ready for his role in the middle of Baltimore’s lineup.

Basallo’s 1.3 WAR is tied with Rutschman for second highest with the franchise, right behind Taylor Ward’s 1.4 mark. Despite the Orioles’ current fourth-place standing in the AL East, it looks as if Baltimore’s offense has finally woken up after an off 2025 campaign. Will Basallo be back in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale? If so, then Saturday’s early exit will be a distant memory for Baltimore fans.
