Oklahoma’s Brent Venables puts Red River Rivalry aside, questions Texas’ CFP snub

Oklahoma football head coach Brent Venables became a rare ally of Texas Wednesday. Even after the Sooners earned their postseason spot over the Longhorns last season. Here’s where the OU head coach put the Red River Rivalry to one side: In questioning Texas’ College Football Playoff snub.

Venables spoke with Sooners Scoop via On3/Rivals calling out the notable pass on the ‘Horns.

“Texas played five teams in the top 25. Another team played one team in the top 25. They got in [Alabama]; Texas didn’t,” Venables said.

Still, Venables’ defense of Texas comes as quite a shock. More so given how intense the annual Red River contest becomes between the storied programs. Oklahoma managed to crack inside the postseason but fell in the first round to Southeastern Conference rival Alabama. The same ‘Bama that had a controversial path to the tournament.

The CFP committee snubbed some notable powers in compiling the 12-team format. Texas emerged as the third team out alongside Notre Dame and BYU. Of the remaining two, the Fighting Irish opted to end their season after missing out on a playoff return.

Alabama’s biggest win came against No. 3 Georgia in Athens, helping spark the Crimson Tide’s argument to get in. Yet Alabama still owned three losses compared to ND’s 10-2 mark and BYU being 11-2 even despite losing in the Big 12 title game. Texas, meanwhile, beat three ranked teams including the Sooners 23-6 back on Oct. 11. But its 27-7 rout of Texas A&M came against another CFP team.

These results are creating the argument for the CFP to expand to 24 teams.
