Giants hit with another pitcher injury in Reds series

The San Francisco Giants suffered another pitching injury against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, one night after Carson Whisenhunt left with an elbow injury.

Adrian Houser exited Tuesday night’s 3-1 win over Cincinnati after just 1 1/3 innings and 26 pitches. After throwing his final pitch to Hector Rodriguez, a 93.9 mph fastball, Houser grimaced, shook his arm and was checked by catcher Drew Cavanaugh. Manager Tony Vitello and a member of the Giants’ medical staff then went to the mound before Houser was removed.

Houser had been effective before leaving. He struck out two batters and had worked through 1 2/3 innings in one account of the outing. His fastball reached at least 96 mph during the first inning, consistent with recent outings in which he had touched 97 and 98 mph, before his velocity dropped in the second inning.

San Francisco now awaits an MRI to determine the severity of Houser’s injury. The 10-year veteran entered Tuesday with a 4-7 record and 4.08 ERA across 25 appearances, including 15 starts, and 108 innings this season. He had also logged a 1.50 ERA across his previous 11 appearances as a long reliever, earning an opportunity to return to the rotation.

The Giants pitching depth has already been tested heavily. Whisenhunt was announced Tuesday as needing Tommy John surgery, joining Hayden Birdsong and Trevor McDonald as the starters whose seasons were cut short by the procedure. Spencer Bivens was called up to replace Whisenhunt, while Tristan Beck and Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson are potential options if Houser’s injury proves serious.

Anthony Molina made his San Francisco debut after replacing Houser and earned his first win. He threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing only one hit and one walk. Carson Seymour recorded his first career save.

The Giants had built a 3-0 lead through five innings, with Drew Cavanaugh driving in two runs and Rafael Devers hitting his 28th home run. Devers became only the third player in franchise history to reach at least 48 homers in his first 222 games, joining Willie Mays and Barry Bonds.

San Francisco improved to 54-78 and will attempt to complete the sweep Wednesday, with Landen Roupp scheduled to face the Reds starter Nick Lodolo.
