Oilers star Leon Draisaitl teases injury return for Game 1 vs. Ducks

The final Game 1 of the first round in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is set for Monday night as the Anaheim Ducks and Edmonton Oilers open their series. As the Oilers prepare to make a run to a third straight Stanley Cup Final, coach Kris Knoblauch has provided an injury update on star forward Leon Draisaitl.

Now, Draisaitl is providing an update on his status and could play in Game 1, per Derek Van Diest of NHL.com.

“I feel good, we’ll see how it feels tomorrow and then we’ll make a call from there,” the German forward said. “It’s been good. Our staff, mainly (strength and conditioning coach Chad Drummond and assistant athletic therapist Chris Davie), they’ve done an amazing job being patient with me and looking at everything that there is to look at. So, I’m very grateful for those two and everyone else that was involved with it.”

Draisaitl has not played since being injured against the Nashville Predators on March 15. He has missed the final 14 games of the year, but did practice with the team when they returned from their final road trip of the year.

“It’s a lot of lonely times when you’re hurt; guys are on the road, you’re kind of grinding by yourself. I’m happy where it’s at right now, we’ll see how it evolves and we’ll see how I feel tomorrow,” Draisaitl continued.

While the star forward played in just 65 games, he still finished second on the team in goals and points. He found the back of the net 35 times while adding 62 assists, good for 97 total points. Puck drop between the Ducks and Oilers is set for 10 p.m. ET.
