Noah Syndergaard admits Jacob deGrom gives him hope of MLB return, but there’s a ‘delusion’ catch
Noah Syndergaard hasn’t completely closed the door on an MLB comeback. And an old New York Mets teammate is apparently giving him hope.
Syndergaard recently spoke with GQ about his life away from baseball and the possibility of eventually returning to the mound. When the conversation turned toward Jacob deGrom continuing to pitch at an elite level late into his career, Syndergaard acknowledged that it’s difficult not to wonder what could still be possible.
“He’s about to turn 38 soon,” Syndergaard told GQ. “That gives me hope. I still have intentions, probably. Maybe it’s just delusion.”
Don’t completely rule out Thor just yet. Syndergaard is only 33 years old, which isn’t ancient by starting pitcher standards. The bigger question is whether his body — and his arm — would allow him to become an effective major-league pitcher again.
Injuries played a significant role in derailing what was once one of baseball’s most promising pitching careers. At his peak, Syndergaard was electric. The long-haired right-hander earned the “Thor” nickname while overpowering hitters with the Mets, where he spent six seasons as deGrom’s teammate. The two helped form one of baseball’s most intimidating rotations when healthy.
Syndergaard eventually bounced around the league after leaving New York, never quite recapturing the dominant form that made him a star. But deGrom’s longevity apparently has Syndergaard thinking.
Of course, the situations aren’t identical. DeGrom has remained one of baseball’s most talented pitchers whenever healthy, while Syndergaard would have to prove he can still get major-league hitters out after spending time away from the game.
Baseball is full of stories. Maybe we’ll see one similar to Thor returning in Love & Thunder.
