Buccaneers’ Emeka Egbuka gets important update after injury scare

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers appear to have avoided a significant injury to star wide receiver Emeka Egbuka after he exited Wednesday’s joint practice with the New York Jets.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that Egbuka suffered a toe injury but that the issue is considered minor.

“#Buccaneers WR Emeka Egbuka’s injury that cut his practice today is a toe issue that’s considered minor, source says,” Garafolo wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “That jibes with RB Bucky Irving telling @MJD earlier during our interview, ‘I think he’s pretty good. He just got rolled over on.’

“Thumbs up on Egbuka’s toe.”

The update provides some relief for Tampa Bay after Egbuka initially sparked concern by leaving practice with athletic trainers. Garafolo reported earlier Wednesday that Egbuka spent an extended period receiving attention on the sideline.

“Buccaneers WR Emeka Egbuka limped off with athletic trainers,” Garafolo reported. “Was examined on the sideline table for a while. Hard to see exactly what’s up from where we are, but he’s still on the table and hasn’t returned.”

About 10 minutes later, Garafolo provided a more encouraging development. Egbuka returned to the sideline without his cleats and watched the remainder of practice alongside his teammates.

“Egbuka, with both cleats off, just walked back to the sideline to watch the rest of practice,” Garafolo said.

Egbuka’s status will remain worth monitoring as the Buccaneers continue their preseason preparations. The former first-round pick has emerged as a key part of Tampa Bay’s receiving corps and offense.

The Buccaneers will face the Jets in their first preseason game Friday at 7 p.m. ET on NFL Network. With Egbuka’s toe injury considered minor, Tampa Bay appears to have avoided a potentially significant setback ahead of the 2026 regular season.
