49ers sign ex-Raiders rusher amid Christian McCaffrey absence

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey didn’t practice on Monday or Tuesday due to general tightness. Now, the 49ers have added some extra reinforcements.

San Francisco has signed fellow running back Zamir White, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. The terms of his new contract have yet to be revealed.

The fact McCaffrey is dealing with soreness rather than a fully defined injury is usually a good sign. But the running back has dealt with a number of injuries throughout his time in San Francisco. The 49ers are going to be cautious with him to ensure their star running back is fully healthy come regular season.

Signing White may raise a few eyebrows due to the timing of McCaffrey’s absence. The franchise is sure to announce a further update on their running back’s injury when he returns to practice. For now, White will battle for an opportunity to be involved in San Francisco’s running back mix with or without McCaffrey.

The running back has spent his entire four-year NFL career with the Las Vegas Raiders, appearing in 45 games. He has run for 736 yards and two touchdowns adding another 152 yards through the air on 25 grabs.

He’ll be joining a running back room that features back up names such as Jordan James, Kaelon Black, Khalil Herbert and more. Because of that, it may be difficult to make the final roster, let alone a true regular season difference.

Still, if the 49ers opt to stay cautious throughout the season with McCaffrey, they’ll need their backup running backs to step up. With a strong training camp and preseason, perhaps White becomes one of those runners.
