Nick Kurtz passes Rickey Henderson in Athletics history vs. Padres

Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz just keeps on doing it.

With his single in the top of the third inning in Sunday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego, Kurtz has finally surpassed the great Rickey Henderson on the franchise’s all-time list for most consecutive games of reaching base at least once.

“Nick Kurtz extends his MLB-best on-base streak to 47 games. He passes one legendary Hall of Famer in Rickey Henderson and ties another in Jimmie Foxx for the second-longest streak in A’s history,” Martín Gallegos of MLB.com shared via a social media post on X.

This is where the 2025 American League Rookie of the Year broke his tie with Henderson on the list:

Just 23 years old, Kurtz still has so much in store for the Athletics. His approach at the plate has been garnering plenty of attention amid his incredible streak, with Athletics manager Mark Kotsay speaking about it during the series against the Padres.

“I like to focus on the player’s day-in, day-out routines,” Kotsay said ahead of the second game in the Padres series on Saturday, via Gallegos. “The consistency that he’s shown. The focus he has when he prepares himself. Every day is a new day for him. That’s where the mindset needs to be. He’s not a hitter that chases hits. He’s a hitter that takes what’s given to him. I think that’s reflective of where he’s at right now.”

The Athletics franchise record for the longest on-base streak is 62 games, set by Mark McGwire from 1995 to 1996.
