NFL rumors: Brendan Sorsby will love Mike Florio’s Kayshon Boutte revelation

The NFL will soon have a decision to make about Brendan Sorsby. The former Texas Tech quarterback was originally ruled ineligible to play due to gambling on NCAA games. However, Sorsby sought an injunction against the NCAA and won, requiring him to only serve a two-game suspension. Now Sorsby intends to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, putting the league under pressure to make a big choice.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk explained that the league needs to make up its mind quickly about what to do with Sorsby.

“Two key questions have arisen, from the NFL’s perspective,” Florio wrote. “First, will the league accept Sorsby into the supplemental draft? Second, will Commissioner Roger Goodell impose a suspension on Sorsby for underage (and thus illegal) gambling and/or for betting on Indiana games while he was on the Indiana roster (but not playing)?”

The NFL’s supplemental draft is usually held in either June or July if the league decides to have one at all. Players must apply to enter the supplemental draft and are approved or denied on a case-by-case basis.

Florio noted that the precedent set by the NFL with Kayshon Boutte could be a clue. Boutte’s gambling addiction in college came to light after the start of his NFL career.

“I’d wake up early in the morning, and the first thing I’d do was bet,” Boutte wrote. “I’d stay up late and bet. All day. All night. I had insomnia, so if I woke up in the middle of the night, phone next to the bed, I’d bet. Any little money I had, it was going straight to FanDuel. . . . I knew I was addicted.”

The NFL did not take any action against Boutte, which suggests they could take a similar stance with Sorsby.

Of course, the league could always simply deny Sorbsy’s application to enter the supplemental draft, too.

It will be fascinating to see what happens next in this saga.
