NFL news: CBS Sports places Tony Romo on leave after OWI arrest

,With the arrest video of Tony Romo hitting the internet, it probably doesn’t help matters that he may have lied during the stop. And now CBS Sports has placed Romo on leave after the Operating While Intoxicated arrest, according to a post on X by Ari Meirov.

“Developing: Tony Romo is on leave from his role at CBS Sports until further notice, the network announced. JJ Watt is going to replace Romo and work with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for now.”

The 46-year-old Romo played 13 years for the Cowboys, from 2014-2016. He threw for 34,183 yards and 248 touchdowns, but only had two postseason victories.

More details have emerged. Romo reportedly had an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. This was found when he was stopped by police last week, authorities said, according to apnews.com.

Romo has been the lead game analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage since 2017.

As for Watt, he joined CBS in 2023. He was an analyst on “The NFL Today” for two seasons. Then he joined with Ian Eagle as part of the network’s No. 2 crew last season.

Romo’s situation adds to a recent list of issues. Here is a list, according to Fox News.

“July 22: The Los Angeles Chargers release guard Ben Cleveland after he is arrested the week before on charges of speeding and driving with a limited permit, according to police reports obtained by the New York Post. That arrest came roughly one-and-a-half-years removed from Cleveland being arrested for DUI.

July 25: News of an accident involving Kyle Shanahan leaks. The San Francisco 49ers coach on July 14 suffered a broken hand, broken nose, broken ribs, a facial laceration and has been battling concussion symptoms after a head-on collision with another car. Shanahan this week took responsibility for the accident, saying he dropped his phone and lost control of his Tesla, which hit an oncoming car.

July 28: Defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander is suspended by the Minnesota Vikings, the team announces, after he pleaded guilty to third-degree DWI. Alexander paid fines and fees, was assigned community service, and will be on probation for two years. He is suspended until Aug. 13.”

Also, the Washington Commanders recently fired tight end coach Ben Steele. It came on the eve of training camp after a DWI arrest in June.
