Saturday afternoon’s match in the Swedish capital will be the third out of six scheduled pre-season friendlies for Manchester United on their tour of Europe.

Michael Carrick’s side kicked off their pre-season campaign with a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Championship side Wrexham in Finland a fortnight ago, before securing their first win of the trip with a 5-0 victory away from home against Norwegian side Rosenborg.

The Red Devils are expected to put out another youthful line up on Saturday against Atletico Madrid, with the majority of United’s World Cup stars still yet to join up with the squad.

Of the three signings Manchester United have made so far this summer, only former Chelsea central midfielder Andrey Santos is available for selection for Saturday’s game, with Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow not yet with the squad.

With the Premier League starting a week later than usual due to the World Cup lasting an extra than normal, there are still three weeks until Manchester United kick off their Premier League campaign against newly promoted Hull on 22nd August.

That has meant several of the club’s academy players have been able to pick up senior minutes against strong opposition, and given five different scorers bagged for United in their win over Rosenborg (Shea Lacey, Joshua Zirkzee, Jacob Devaney, Harry Amass and Ethan Williams), Carrick will be delighted at how it is playing out.

Following Saturday’s match in Stockholm, United then stay in Sweden for a friendly against European champions PSG in Gothenburg next weekend, before playing Leeds in Dublin and AC Milan in Poland in their final week of pre-season before their Premier League campaign gets underway.

Intriguingly, Atletico Madrid’s campaign gets underway on a Wednesday night this season as they take host Malaga in a staggered start to the domestic campaign where some of the heavy hitters of Spanish football start a few days, or even a week, later than the rest of the league.

Despite their season kicking off a few days before Man Utd’s, Atletico Madrid only kicked off their pre-season campaign on Wednesday night with a 4-1 win over Getafe behind closed doors, with three more matches being played in August before the campaign gets underway.

Diego Simeone’s side will be looking for a more impressive season than last time out, where they finished fourth in the league but performed well in the cups without being able to get over the finishing line and lift some silverware.

The Spanish side were beaten in the final of the Cope del Rey and reached the semi finals of each of the Champions League (where they lost to Arsenal) and Supercopa de Espana.

Atletico are also expected to be playing a youthful side with a number of their first team members also not back from the World Cup, including four players from the Spanish team who have been recently crowned champions of the world.

As a result, like their opponents, only one of their three new signings has made the trip to Stockholm, with ex-Sporting Lisbon central midfielder Morten Hjulmand in line to play, with Kang-In Lee and Alejandro Grimaldo both yet to join the squad.

Following Saturday’s match, the Spanish side will then fly out to South Korea where they will play a friendly against Manchester City, before returning to Spain via the south of France, where they’ll play a final friendly against Marseille.

Manchester United make the trip to Sweden as favourites for victory against Atletico Madrid following a promising season last time out which saw them finish third, and after a strong showing in Norway last week, another win should be expected on Saturday – perhaps a 2-1 Man Utd victory looking the most likely scoreline.

Manchester United will be slightly more match sharp than their opponents on Saturday afternoon having already played two pre-season matches.

The Red Devils recovered well from their defeat to Wrexham to fire five goals past Rosenborg last weekend, with four goals scored by academy players, which will please Carrick greatly.

Saturday’s will be Atletico Madrid’s first pre-season match with fans in the stadium having only played one behind closed doors game against Getafe so far this summer.

Both teams will field strong sides but there will be an emphasis on youth with a number of players on both teams yet to report back to training following the World Cup.
