Yankees rumors: New York linked to Adley Rutschman, Hunter Goodman amid trade deadline catching pursuit

The New York Yankees are rumored to be interested in acquiring a catcher ahead of the August 3 trade deadline. With speculation running rampant, it appears the front office has at least inquired about Adley Rutschman and Hunter Goodman, along with other catchers in the league.

Reports indicate that the Yankees are one of several teams to have called the Colorado Rockies to discuss the possibility of trading Goodman, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Just for good measure, it’s said the front office has also reached out to the Baltimore Orioles regarding Rutschman and the Cincinnati Reds about Tyler Stephenson.

“Yankees are among many teams talking to the Rockies about Hunter Goodman,” Heyman reported. “Still seen as less than 50-50 Goodman is dealt anywhere. The 2-time All-Star has 3 more years of control. NYY also has checked on Adley Rutschman, Tyler Stephenson, and many other catchers.”

Based on Heyman’s reporting, it appears acquiring a catcher is the top priority for the Yankees ahead of the trade deadline. Rutschman and Goodman have been in the rumor mill for several weeks now, as their respective teams are on the outside looking in on the playoff race. Either one of those two would be a great addition in New York, as they each bring plenty of talent to the catcher position.

Rutschman, who is 28 years old, has been limited to just 67 games so far this season as he’s struggled with injuries. But when he’s healthy, the five-year veteran has proven to be reliable in the batter’s box. So far this year, he has recorded 62 hits, eight home runs, and 47 RBIs through 247 at-bats, giving him a .251 batting average and .331 OBP.

As for Goodman, the two-time All-Star is in the middle of a career year. Through 374 at-bats, he’s totaled 95 hits, 31 home runs (tied career-high), 60 RBIs, and five stolen bases (career-high) while owning a .254 batting average and .326 OBP (career-high).
