Thunder exec’s ‘sad ‘confession on trading Aaron Wiggins, Isaiah Joe, Lu Dort

The Oklahoma City Thunder entered the 2026 offseason facing the difficult realities of maintaining a championship-caliber roster, and one team executive admitted the decisions to trade Aaron Wiggins, Isaiah Joe and Lu Dort were among the toughest the organization has made.

Keith Smith of Spotrac shared comments from a Thunder front office executive, who described the departures as an unfortunate consequence of the NBA’s current financial landscape after Oklahoma City reshaped its roster following a run to the 2025 NBA championship and a seven-game loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 Western Conference Finals.

“It’s sad. That’s the best way I can put it. You get these guys, they develop into awesome players and then you have to let them go. But it’s the reality of where the league is now. You can’t keep everyone. We’re not immune. We’re going through what others have gone through too,” the executive said.

“What you hope is that you take care of those players, send them to a place where they can continue to flourish and that you have players ready to step in and step up.”

The Thunder began their offseason by trading Wiggins to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Atlanta’s 2030 second-round pick and the least favorable of the Hawks’ or Los Angeles Lakers’ second-round pick in 2032.

Oklahoma City then dealt Joe to the Detroit Pistons for second-round picks in 2030, via the Minnesota Timberwolves, and 2031 as the franchise continued to create roster flexibility while adding future draft assets.

The most emotional move came later in the offseason when the Thunder traded Dort to the Hawks as part of a three-team deal. Atlanta acquired Dort and Ryan Nembhard, the Dallas Mavericks received Zaccharie Risacher, and Oklahoma City added three second-round draft picks.

The same Thunder executive acknowledged that Dort’s departure carried additional weight because of his impact on the franchise both on and off the court.

“Like I told you before, it’s sad. But this one really stings. Lu was a big part of everything we did. We’ll forever love Lu for coming in from Day 1 with the attitude that no one would work and play harder. But he also took feedback on his game and made real strides with his game, especially on offense,” the executive said.

“That set a tone for everyone, including every young player we brought in. That’s going to be really hard to replace.”

While the Thunder retained the core that helped establish the franchise as a Western Conference contender, the offseason underscored the challenges of keeping together a deep, homegrown roster under the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement. Oklahoma City now will rely on its player development pipeline once again as it looks to remain among the league’s elite despite the loss of three key contributors.
