The Philadelphia Eagles are rarely shy about throwing money around. Philly recent re-signed DT Jalen Carter to a massive $152 million extension that makes him the highest-paid in the NFL by a wide margin. That massive deal includes at least one interesting feature that is rarely seen in NFL contracts.

New details have emerged about Carter’s recent contract extension. One interesting wrinkle is that Carter’s contract includes a $250,000 annual “weight bonus” per PFT’s Mike Florio.

The contract does not officially state what weight limit the Eagles want for Carter. It also does not include the date each year when he must hit that weight. For context, Carter is officially listed at 314 pounds on ESPN.

Weight can be an important factor for a defensive player like Carter. While he does need some girth to play on the interior of the defensive line, his calling card is getting after the quarterback. Carter needs the requisite short-area burst and acceleration to put offensive linemen in a blender. If Carter does not have that ability, he is simply not the same player.

Realistically, $250,000 per season is a drop in the bucket when Carter earns $38 million a year. Still, it was important enough for Philadelphia to include it in Carter’s contract in the first place.

Carter and teammate Jordan Davis will form the backbone on Philadelphia’s defense for many years to come. Davis himself received a three-year, $78 million extension back in March. Both players are now under contract with the Eagles through at least the 2029 NFL season.

Now the Eagles can focus their roster building efforts on other positions over the next few offseasons. They will also benefit from stability on the interior of their defense ahead of a crucial 2026 campaign.

It will be exciting to see how Philly’s defense looks during their preseason games in August.
