Rolly Romero vs Teofimo Lopez undercard to include two of boxing’s top prospects

The Rolly Romero vs Teofimo Lopez undercard is brimming with talent.

Romero (17-2) puts his WBA welterweight title on the line against Lopez (22-2) on August 22 at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena in PBC’s debut show on DAZN.

The Sin City puncher picked up the vacant WBA ‘regular’ strap by defeating Ryan Garcia via unanimous decision in May 2025.

He was upgraded to full champion three months later when Jaron Ennis vacated the ‘super’ title and will now make the first defence of his belt against Lopez, who is coming off a loss to Shakur Stevenson in January.

On Thursday, PBC announced the first three supporting bouts for Romero-Lopez, featuring an interim title fight and two of boxing’s brightest prospects.

In the co-main event, Cuban middleweight standout Yoenli Hernandez takes on Francisco Daniel Veron of Argentina.

Two-time IBA World Amateur Champion Hernandez has been moved quickly during a perfect 10-0 start to life in professional boxing.

Last time out in March, he blew away former world title challenger Terrell Gausha inside four rounds after scoring a shutout unanimous decision victory over Kyrone Davis in May 2025.

He is now poised for a world title shot, having earned top 10 rankings secured with all four major sanctioning bodies (WBA and WBO No.1, WBC No.2 and IBF No.9).

Veron (17-1-1) was beaten by ultimate upsetter Brandon Adams in August 2024, but has since rebounded to record three consecutive victories.

Further down the bill, WBA interim super bantamweight champion Victor Santillan locks horns with Gary Antonio Russell.

The 122lbs division is, of course, ruled by undisputed champion Naoya Inoue, but with the Japanese superstar recently revealing his intentions to move up to featherweight, the winner could end up being elevated to full world champion.

Santillan (16-2) halted Noel Reyes Cepeda in three rounds to win the interim belt following defeats to Sho Ishida and Tenshin Nasukawa.

Russell (21-1) fell to the sole defeat of his career against two-time bantamweight world champion Emmanuel Rodriguez in October 2022, but has since recorded back-to-back stoppage wins.

The third and final bout added to the bill this week is a super lightweight scrap between fast-rising Colombian Carlos Utria and Israel Mercado of the United States.

Utria (14-0) won the inaugural WBC super lightweight Grand Prix, defeating Asian Amateur champion Mujibillo Tursunov in the final last December.

Many publications, including BoxingScene, named him 2025 Prospect of the Year.

Mercado (13-1-2) is the NABA North American super lightweight champion, although he opens up as a heavy underdog.
