Vikings facing game-changing dilemma as Harrison Smith ponders future

The Minnesota Vikings are faced with a difficult dilemma at the start of training camp. Minnesota always knew that veteran safety Harrison Smith would retire one day. That possibility is looking more realistic than ever before based on how Smith has approached the offseason.

Smith is still undecided on whether or not he’ll return for his 15th season in the NFL, per The Athletic’s Alec Lewis.

The 37-year-old veteran has stayed in shape throughout the offseason. However, he has yet to show up for any of Minnesota’s offseason activities, including the beginning of training camp.

Smith apparently wants to “feel fully convinced” that he is making the right decision about his future. As such, the Vikings are not expecting Smith to make up his mind during the early days of camp.

If Smith does decide to retire, that could become a big problem for the Vikings. Minnesota has thought about how to replace Harrison, but that does not make the process any easier.

“While waiting for a decision, the Vikings know they cannot afford to take his void for granted,” Lewis wrote. “Veteran safety Josh Metellus said not having Smith was like missing a major portion of the pie chart that allows Minnesota’s defense to stay amorphous and problematic. For that reason, the unit spent most of the spring’s organized team activities toggling through possibilities.”

Minnesota reportedly tried out multiple players during OTAs in an attempt to build a succession plan for Smith. The Vikings gave new responsibilities to Metellus as well as safeties Theo Jackson and rookie Jakobe Thomas. They even got linebackers Eric Wilson and Ivan Pace Jr. in on the action.

Smith was still a capable safety during the 2025 season. He logged 54 total tackles with one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one interception, and 10 passes defensed last year.

Hopefully Smith makes up his mind one way or another soon. That would give Minnesota the best chance to prepare for a crucial 2026 campaign.
