Neymar injured again days before FIFA World Cup
With just weeks left for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, Brazilian and International fans felt relieved when former Barcelona and PSG star Neymar was selected into Brazil’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Currently playing for Santos, Neymar broke down in tears once the confirmation of his squad selection became public. However, just hours after getting selected and days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Neymar found himself injured again.
Neymar has sustained a calf injury that will sideline him for Santos’ upcoming matches. However, he is expected to be ready and fit next week to join the Brazil national team camp ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Rodrigo Zogaib, the head of medical for Santos, confirmed on Wednesday, May. 20, 2026, that Neymar suffered a 2-millimeter edema, causing swelling in his right calf. Despite the setback, the injury is not expected to prevent his World Cup dream. He is expected to get fit by May. 27, 2026, just in time for Brazil’s preparation for the World Cup.
“Neymar has a minor calf injury, an edema,” Zogaib said to Brazilian sports network GE. “But, according to our planning, his progress will allow him to be fit next week when he will join up with the national team.” (via ESPN)
Neymar is undergoing treatment at the Rei Pelé Training Center in Santos, assisted by his personal medical team and under the close observation of doctors from the Brazilian Football Confederation.
Also, according to sources close to ESPN, the injury raised concerns with coach Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff ahead of the final roster announcement. Brazil is next set to play Panama in a friendly game in May. 31, 2026.
