NBA rumors: Mavericks hit Timberwolves, Pistons with harsh Kyrie Irving trade reality
If there is a positive takeaway from the lowly campaign of the Dallas Mavericks this season, it is, obviously, the fast rise of Cooper Flagg. He lived up to the hype as the No. 1 pick and showed that he truly belonged in the NBA.
With Flagg’s impressive ascension as the face of the franchise, it begs the question: What will happen to Kyrie Irving?
Irving sat out the season due to an ACL injury, which compounded the Mavericks’ woes. Recently, trade rumors involving the fleet-footed guard have heated up. The Minnesota Timberwolves, the Detroit Pistons, and the Brooklyn Nets are among the squads reportedly eyeing him.
But according to NBA insider Jake Fischer, dealing Irving seems unlikely for the Mavericks.
“The Pistons, Timberwolves, and Nets are all teams that rival front office executives and agents have described as highly interested in adding some of that off-the-dribble playmaking this offseason,” wrote Fischer on Substack.
“Dallas has been telling teams inquiring about Kyrie Irving—who would naturally interest both the Timberwolves and the Pistons—that the nine-time former All-Star is not currently available via trade.”
Both the Pistons and the Timberwolves suffered early exits in the playoffs, as their youth and inexperience were exposed. Adding a battle-tested star like Irving would be a logical move, but as Fischer noted, that option has hit a dead end.
Masai Ujiri, who was recently installed as the Mavericks’ president of basketball operations, already stated that they are bullish on the pairing of Flagg and Irving.
At the very least, Dallas probably wants to first see if the duo could work before considering offers for Irving.
