NBA rumors: Insider floats Joel Embiid-Domantas Sabonis trade as longest of longshots

The Philadelphia 76ers will have some decisions to make this offseason, and the first will be trying to find a new president of basketball operations after parting ways with Daryl Morey. That new executive will inherit a roster that has the talent to compete, but could be better in a lot of areas.

Joel Embiid is a name that could come up, and his future seems to be questionable in Philadelphia. He’s still on a large contract for the next few years, but it’s obvious that his injuries have held him back, and maybe even the team. At that point, it’s hard to see if any team would be willing to trade for him, and with the new lottery reform, teams aren’t just going to give up their first-round picks.

If there was a trade out there for Embiid, it might be with the Sacramento Kings for Domantas Sabonis, but NBA insider Jae Fischer says don’t count on it.

“One longshot scenario that does get mentioned by rival team strategists is an Embiid-for-Domantas Sabonis swap with Sacramento … but even longshot might be underselling it,” Fischer wrote. “Both former All-Star big men could probably use a fresh start, but there’s just no getting around the fact that Embiid, at 32, seems incapable of holding up for a deep playoff run. Which certainly shortens the list of potential suitors.”

Sabonis floated around in trade rumors during the deadline this season, but it seems as though the Kings didn’t have an offer on the table that they liked. It’s possible that they could revisit trade talks this offseason surrounding him, but having them with the 76ers about Embiid might be far-fetched.

The hope for the 76ers is that they can continue to find ways to keep Embiid fresh throughout the season, and that should lead to him playing more games.
