NFL news: CBS makes Ross Tucker move amid Tony Romo’s indefinite leave

CBS Sports has adjusted its NFL broadcasting lineup for the 2026 season after Tony Romo was placed on indefinite leave following an OWI arrest.

Romo was arrested in Wisconsin on July 23 on suspicion of operating while under the influence. Police reportedly found an open bottle of alcohol in his vehicle. CBS announced about a week later that Romo would remain away from the network until further notice.

The move created changes throughout CBS’s top broadcast groups. JJ Watt, who had been working as the color analyst on the No. 2 crew with Ian Eagle, has been elevated to the lead booth alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

That promotion opened Watt’s previous position, and CBS has moved Ross Tucker into the No. 2 team with Eagle. Tucker will also work with Evan Washburn. Tucker and Eagle have previously worked together on Thursday Night Football radio broadcasts for Westwood One, giving the new CBS pairing an existing working relationship.

Tucker has been part of CBS’s NFL coverage and has regularly worked games with Tom McCarthy. He also calls college football for CBS, handles Westwood One’s Thursday Night Football radio coverage, hosts the Ross Tucker Football Podcast for DraftKings and works Philadelphia Eagles preseason games on local television.

Tucker’s promotion also affects CBS’s lower-tier NFL coverage. Former Seattle Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts running back Robert Turbin has been elevated to the sixth broadcast team alongside McCarthy and Tiffany Blackmon, replacing Tucker.

CBS has also selected former New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans defensive back Logan Ryan for the booth with Andrew Catalon. Ryan worked CBS NFL and college football games last season and previously spent a week shadowing Nantz and Romo before joining the Patriots-Buccaneers broadcast in November.

The network’s other established pairings remain intact, including Kevin Harlan with Trent Green and Melanie Collins, and Spero Dedes with Adam Archuleta and Aditi Kinkhabwala.

CBS has also added Luke Kuechly as a game analyst and Darius Slay as a studio analyst, while Mackenzie Brooks joins the network as the lead HQ analyst for Inside the Lines.
