NBA rumors: Could Bucks actually not trade Giannis Antetokounmpo again?
NBA executives understand the nature of this business. They expect trade talks to fizzle out on occasion. A spark does not guarantee a full-blown flame. However, when a superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo is dangled in front of teams multiple times within a six-month span, people are going to expect a deal to take place. The Milwaukee Bucks risk tarnishing their reputation if they choose to leave the table once again.
When the Jon Horst-led front office decided to retain Antetokounmpo through the trade deadline, the expectation was that it would attempt to maximize return value in the offseason. Though, reports indicate that the organization has not secured the offers it had initially anticipated, which has some people wondering if Milwaukee would actually withdraw from another round of negotiations.
But it might be too late to change course now. The intel that NBA correspondent Marc Stein has gathered seems to support such a notion.
“I have yet to encounter a rival team out there that believes the Bucks, having taken this round of trade talks so far down the line, would have the gumption to shut the Giannis Trade Sweepstakes down one more time and try to move forward with him after the draft,” Stein writes.
“Who would want to talk Giannis trades with the Bucks again after yet another drawn-out tease on top of a similar outcome at the trade deadline when Milwaukee invited teams such as Miami, Golden State and Minnesota to make their best offers in February? The Bucks also have to ask themselves: Will Antetokounmpo’s value ever be this high again.”
Stein also highlights a potential worst-case scenario that the Bucks are surely considering. Antetokounmpo could decline his $62.78 million player option for the 2027-28 season and simply sign somewhere else in free agency, leaving the Bucks as the biggest punchline in the league.
Following all the speculation and invalidated trade rumors, it appears the Giannis Antetokounmpo saga has finally approached The Rubicon. Turning back now could sow distrust and lingering animosity.
