NBA rumors: Celtics a threat to Knicks for potential Mitchell Robinson replacement
The Boston Celtics have had an eventful offseason thus far, recently swinging and missing on a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade and now finding themselves in choppy waters with star Jaylen Brown. Many anticipate that Boston will end up moving Brown before too long as the star’s discontent grows increasingly obvious.
Recently, Marc Stein and Jake Fischer reported on another player that Boston has its eyes on in free agency: center Kevon Looney. However, they will have some competition in the form of the newly crowned NBA champion New York Knicks.
“It’s believed that Looney is also on Boston’s list of center targets, which is likewise known to feature former Celtics big man Robert Williams III. Yet don’t forget that Knicks coach Mike Brown has a pre-existing relationship with Looney thanks to their time together in Golden State,” they reported on Stein’s Substack.
The Knicks are likely to be in the market for a big man this offseason after Mitchell Robinson’s likely departure, which seems destined to happen due to James Dolan’s unwillingness to go into the second apron.
ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel had also reported that the Knicks could be a landing spot for Looney, who last played for the New Orleans Pelicans.
Frontcourt depth was an issue for the Celtics throughout last season. Although the team tried to rectify this by trading for Nikola Vucevic from the Chicago Bulls, that deal ended up not paying many dividends in the playoffs.
While Looney wouldn’t start in Boston, he would give the team an experienced veteran and NBA champion who would immediately give the Celtics a boost in the offensive rebounding department, where they were already elite last year.
In any case, the NBA free agency period is slated to open up on June 30.
