Mystics win historic 4 overtime marathon vs Fire

With the Washington Mystics coming off back-to-back losses to the Minnesota Lynx and the Connecticut Sun, the team would secure a grueling and exciting win against the Portland Fire in a historic quadruple-overtime game on Sunday, 124-123. As Mystics star Sonia Citron led the team in the impactful win, it is only the second time in WNBA history that a game had to have four overtime periods.

The combined score of 247 points is also the most in WNBA history, beating the previous mark set on Sept. 29, 2009, when the Phoenix Mercury beat the Indiana Fever, 120-116, in Game of the WNBA Finals. The game was sent into quadruple overtime due to the Fire’s Bridget Carleton hitting a turnaround jumper at the baseline to tie the contest at 116 points a piece.

However, a late Citron layup for Washington and Carla Leite making one of two free throws for Portland late would seal the deal on what was a game to remember in WNBA history.

Citron would be impactful for the Mystics, as she led the team with 32 points on nine of 20 shooting from the field, though just making one of seven from beyond the arc, to go along with six rebounds and four assists. She was especially impactful at the free-throw line, making 13 of her 14 attempts.

Michaela Onyenwere had 30 points on nine og 16 shooting from the field, six of nine from deep, to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Kiki Iriafen would also record a 27-point, 11-rebound double-double to help Washington propel itself past the Fire in a can’t-miss game, with the team looking to take the momentum into their next outing on July 2 against the Atlanta Dream.
