MLBPA makes 2 firings with cause after internal investigation
The MLBPA fired two individuals from its organization on Wednesday. These firings stem from the internal investigations that were initially launched by the DOJ, looking into the MLBPA’s misuse of funds and inappropriate relations that ended Tony Clark’s tenure as the executive director of the organization back in February.
Chief Operating Officer Xavier James and the head of human resources, Michael O’Neill, were the two individuals fired by the MLBPA, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Don Van Natta Jr. With the firings completed, reports also indicate that investigations are still underway.
“The Major League Baseball Players Association fired chief operating officer Xavier James and its head of human resources, Michael O’Neill, with cause today, sources tell me and Don Van Natta Jr,” reported Passan. “The firings came after an internal investigation spurred by the DOJ looking into the MLBPA.
“The firings of James and O’Neill come in the wake of the resignation of former MLBPA executive director Tony Clark in February,” continued Passan. “The Eastern District of New York’s investigation into union affairs is ongoing. Players hired outside counsel to likewise look into the matter.”
Former MLB pitcher Chris Capuano, who played in the league for 12 seasons, is stepping in as the chief operating officer to replace Xavier James, per Passan. Meanwhile, Ian Penny is filling in as the head of the HR department, with O’Neil no longer with the MLBPA.
“Longtime major leaguer Chris Capuano will take over as chief operating officer at the MLBPA after the firing of Xavier James, a source tells ESPN,” said Passan. “Ian Penny, a senior adviser to executive director Bruce Meyer, will handle HR duties following the firing of Michael O’Neill.”
In the meantime, it sounds like Bruce Meyer will remain in his role as the executive director of the MLBPA. More information could come to light in the coming weeks or months, as investigations continue.
