The New York Knicks will look to kick off the NBA Finals on a high note on Wednesday during Game 1 vs. the San Antonio Spurs. They could be without backup center Mitchell Robinson for the series opener.

UPDATE: Robinson is expected to be available for Game 1, according to Shams Charania.

Robinson is questionable for Game 1 after undergoing surgery on his right hand. The Knicks center reportedly injured himself at home last week, fracturing his right fifth metacarpal.

Robinson’s absence would loom large for a Knicks team attempting to match up with Victor Wembanyama. However, the Knicks center is expected to give it a go on Wednesday in San Antonio.

The Knicks are preparing to have Robinson in the lineup, according to ESPN’s Vince Goodwill. However, it’s unclear how effective he will be while wearing a splint on his right hand.

“We know that he’s going to play,” Goodwill said. “The Knicks are doing a little subterfuge by saying he’s officially listed as questionable, but everything that we’ve heard says that he’s going to play. How effective he will be remains to be seen following a surgery like that, whether it’s a pinky, a hand, whatever it was. The Knicks actually allowed us to see Mitchell Robinson practice yesterday, and I think that gives us a little bit of a glimpse into how confident they are.”

Robinson has been a key piece during the Knicks’ playoff run, averaging 5.3 points and 5.5 rebounds on 73.7 percent shooting in only 14.2 minutes per night. His interior defense, offensive rebounding and lob finishing will be critical for New York as they attempt to find solutions for Wembanyama on both ends of the floor.
