Mike McCarthy makes ‘pure joy’ admission on Aaron Rodgers reunion

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hard at work in training camp, preparing for the 2026 NFL season. Aaron Rodgers is back under center as the quarterback of the Steelers. And he has been reunited with a former coach, as veteran sideline boss Mike McCarthy has taken up the mantle in the Steel City.

McCarthy and Rodgers spent time together with the Green Bay Packers from 2006 until 2018. Green Bay won a Super Bowl in this time, and Rodgers ascended to elite quarterback status, having won multiple MVPs. A lot of time has passed since they split, but the veteran coach is certainly looking forward to working with the future Hall of Fame quarterback again.

“It’s pure joy, frankly, just to be able to go through this with him in his final year,” the Steelers head coach said, via SiriusXM NFL Radio. “Frankly, I’m in the fourth quarter, just starting the fourth quarter. At this point in our lives, to have this opportunity, it’s incredible.”

The Steelers are certainly hoping to build upon last season’s performance. Their season came down to the final game of the year. A missed Tyler Loop field goal saw Pittsburgh make the playoffs in Week 18. Unfortunately, their postseason run lasted one game.

McCarthy is back on the sidelines following a year away. In addition to his aforementioned time with the Packers, the veteran head coach most recently worked with the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas made three playoff appearances under his watch, winning just one game.

The Steelers begin their quest for a Super Bowl title in 2026 when they take on the Atlanta Falcons on September 13.
