Giants add depth to secondary with intriguing move on ex-Chargers DB

As head coach John Harbaugh goes through his first training camp with the New York Giants, he is carefully evaluating his new roster. That has led the franchise to making an addition to their secondary.

The Giants have signed safety JT Woods, via Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. The terms of his agreement are not yet known.

Woods originally was third-round pick by the Chargers back in 2022. He lasted two years with the franchise, appearing in 13 total games with one start. Woods put up eight tackles in that time.

After being released in 2024, the safety bounced around five different practice squads. But he hasn’t played an actual snap in the league since his days in Los Angeles.

While his numbers may not jump off the page, Woods’ game clearly stood out to Harbaugh and company. The head coach is still building the foundation of his new franchise. That’s not to say Woods will be a part of it. Joining training camp at this stage, he’ll be facing an uphill battle to make the final roster. But at the very least, the safety has earned another NFL opportunity.

The Giants finished their 2025 campaign in the middle of the pack when it comes to passing defense, ranking 16th overall by allowing 214.2 yards per game. As Harbaugh takes over, he’ll be looking to only climb up those rankings.

Woods won’t be the solution to that problem on his own. But he now gives the Giants another safety to work with as they figure out their final secondary plans.
