Steelers part ways with WR days before preseason game vs. Packers

The Pittsburgh Steelers faced an injury scare involving prized free agent wide receiver Michael Pittman II. But now the franchise made a quick roster change during NFL Training Camp. This one coming before head coach Mike McCarthy faces his old team the Green Bay Packers in NFL Preseason.

Pittsburgh has waived Colton Dowell, which arrives two days after landing him off waivers. Steelers insider for Pittsburgh Sports Now Alan Saunders added how Dowell didn’t participate in Saturday’s evening practice.

Dowell previously played for the Tennessee Titans as a seventh round find for the 2023 class. But he eventually bounced around in playing for the Baltimore Ravens in 2025, then landing momentarily with the San Francisco 49ers at the start of 2026 training camp.

Pittsburgh should still have plenty of depth for its preseason slate of games. Pittman likely will rest up anyway ahead of the season opener. Returning quarterback Aaron Rodgers also isn’t expected to take snaps for the contest against one of his former teams too.

Signs point to rookie Drew Allar out of Penn State taking the bulk of the QB1 reps. Allar has reportedly shown strong chemistry with some of his veteran targets. DK Metcalf is one he’s built a rapport with during his first camp. Brandon Smith and tight end Robert Tonyan (another past McCarthy player and receiver for Rodgers with Green Bay) are two more establishing a rapport with Allar.

Allar slipped out of the first round after fueling day one draft hype. He’s since leaned into Rodgers’ expertise in adjusting to the NFL.
