Michigan’s Trey McKenney hints at future after Dusty May’s departure
Michigan basketball will have a new head coach in 2026-27. Dusty May has left the program, and Mike Boynton Jr. will be the interim coach. With the naming of Boynton as the coach, Michigan players will have a window to enter the transfer portal if they choose to do so.
Now, one of the stars from last year’s championship run, Trey McKenney, has given insight into his future, posting on X, formerly Twitter.

McKenney scored 9.9 points per game while adding 2.8 rebounds, playing 22.1 minutes for May and the Wolverines. He noted he was surprised by May’s exit, according to Angelique Chengelis of The Detroit News.
“I would say I’m just shocked,” McKenney said. “I don’t want to have too many comments on it, but I’m just really excited with the group of guys we have now, and hopefully we can retain everybody. We have a really great staff, excluding Dusty, so I think we’ll be fine if everybody just settles down and believes in what we have in our facility.”
McKenney also noted that he found out about the move online, but is still confident in the program and the new coach, Boynton.
“I think he’s the guy for the job,” McKenney said. “He’s the guy who recruited me, him and Dusty, so I really trust in him and what he’s going to be able to do for the program. Other people have to come on board and believe the same way I do. So I’m just really excited to see what happens in the next few weeks.”
Michigan will now look to defend its national championship, and it seems that McKenney will be joining the team on the quest.
