Mexico goalkeeper seals Group A with insane double-save to beat South Korea in World Cup
It took a lot of effort, but Mexico has secured its spot in the knockout rounds after taking down South Korea in an entertaining 1-0 showdown on Thursday night during Matchday 2 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Going into the match, Mexico boasted a lot of positive momentum. Being one of the three co-hosts of the tournament, they began their journey with a solid 2-0 win over South Africa. As a result, they earned all three points from that game, needing another win to punch its ticket to the Round of 32.
They went up against South Korea, who were also seeking their place in the next round after stunning Czechia 2-1 in Matchday 1. The matchup ensued and the game remained scoreless until the second half.
South Korea’s goalkeeper tried to secure possession of the ball but lost control of it as it became loose. This opened up the opportunity for Mexico’s Luis Romo to strike the ball and have it go to the back of the net, which he succeeded in pulling off.
South Korea tried to tie the game in the final minutes and came very close to doing do. Despite their efforts, Mexico’s goalie Raul Rangel pulled off a spectacular save while being on the ground to protect his country’s lead and secure the hard-fought win.

Mexico looks forward to its last game in the group stage before preparing for the Round of 32. They take on Czechia in Matchday 3, which takes place on June 23 at 9 p.m. ET.
