I'm not too fussed about it: Markram unfazed by LSG captaincy speculation

Aiden Markram has dismissed speculation about taking over the Lucknow Super Giants captaincy in the Indian Premier League 2027. The South African T20I captain is currently leading Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred Men's tournament, a sister franchise of LSG under the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group. Markram's comments come after Rishabh Pant relinquished the LSG captaincy following IPL 2026 and subsequently moved to the Delhi Capitals.

When asked about the possibility of captaining LSG, Markram reflected on the franchise's leadership options and his current focus. The right-handed batter acknowledged the quality of leaders within the LSG squad while emphasising his contentment with his present role.

"I've got no idea. They can decide whatever they think is best. There are some quality leaders in that group that we have there, so I'm not too fussed about it. Whoever gets it, I'm sure will take it on and do a good job, but the thoughts haven't been there just yet," Markram told Cricinfo.

Markram has considerable experience leading a franchise in the shortest format. He is currently captaining Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred, where the side has won two and lost three of their first five matches, placing them fifth on the points table. The right-handed batter reflected on his captaincy duties at Manchester, highlighting the support he has received from senior players like Jos Buttler.

"It comes with its challenges, but it's been awesome. I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It obviously helps a lot to have guys like Jos [Buttler] around. He's helped me quite a bit." Markram said.

Experience leading Manchester Super Giants

Markram also shared his thoughts on the unique demands of The Hundred format, which features 100 balls per side instead of the traditional 120 balls in T20 cricket. He acknowledged the tactical adjustments required in the compressed format and expressed his enthusiasm for the competition's standard.

"It's obviously much quicker, and still the idea of 10 balls from one side [is a challenge]. You sometimes think you've snuck five in, and you remember there's still another five to the short side, or whatever it might be. But good fun, great comp, great standard as well, so I'm thoroughly enjoying it," he added.

LSG finished last in the 10-team IPL 2026 with four wins in 13 matches. The franchise will need to identify a new captain for the upcoming season following Pant's departure. Markram's focus, however, remained on his current responsibilities with Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred.
