Status of Cardinals’ Josh Sweat draws intriguing update amid PUP list designation

The Arizona Cardinals continue to take a cautious approach with one of their cornerstone players. Veteran edge rusher Josh Sweat remains on the active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Sure, first-year head coach Mike LaFleur offered an encouraging update. Still, he stopped short of providing a timetable for the Pro Bowl alternate’s return.

According to Cardinals insider Tyler Drake, LaFleur said Sweat is “continuing to build” as he works through his recovery. He also emphasized that no definitive timeline has been established for Sweat or any of the team’s other players currently on the PUP list. The update keeps Sweat’s status among the biggest storylines of training camp. That’s especially true after LaFleur previously described the designation as part of a knee maintenance plan.

Arizona can activate Sweat from the active/PUP list at any point before final roster cuts. That gives the organization flexibility. Until then, the Cardinals appear content to prioritize the veteran’s long-term health over rushing him back onto the field. Considering Sweat’s importance to their defense, the franchise will closely monitor his progression throughout camp with hopes of having him fully ready when the regular season begins.

Drafted in 2018 out of Florida State, Josh Sweat has steadily developed into one of the NFL’s most productive edge rushers. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2021 and played a pivotal role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX championship run. Sweat signed with the Cardinals in free agency ahead of the 2025 season and immediately rewarded Arizona’s investment by starting all 17 games. He posted career highs with 12.0 sacks and four forced fumbles while earning Pro Bowl alternate recognition and emerging as the centerpiece of the Cardinals’ pass rush.
