Lakers fans will love Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton’s early chemistry

Walker Kessler and Collin Sexton did not need any time to get reacquainted in Los Angeles. Footage of the two putting in work together during Big A Classic runs this week showed the pair already building on-court chemistry ahead of the Lakers’ training camp, a continuation of a bond that dates back to their three seasons together with the Utah Jazz.

The two arrived in Los Angeles through separate but connected paths this offseason.

The Lakers acquired Kessler from Utah in a sign-and-trade back on July 1, sending unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, along with first-round swaps in 2028 and 2030, in exchange for the 24-year-old center, who signed a four-year, $130 million deal. Sexton joined shortly after on a two-year, $19 million contract, reuniting the former Jazz teammates in a new city.

Sexton wasted no time explaining why he believes Kessler will thrive in his new environment, pointing to the center’s mentality as his defining trait.

“I would say his mindset, and being able to come in and give it his all each and every night,” Sexton said. “He’s one of those people that’s very competitive.”

Sexton also spoke to the personal bond the two have built over the years, one that predates their time together in Utah entirely.

“Me and Walker, we have built a really good relationship over the past four or five years. Even just like when he was in school, he’s from Atlanta as well,” Sexton said. “Our connection on the court is pretty cool.”

The Lakers are counting on that familiarity to pay off quickly.

Kessler gives Luka Doncic the defensive-anchor center he reportedly requested, while Sexton projects as the first guard off Los Angeles’ bench, addressing a reserve unit that ranked 29th in the league in scoring last season.

With so much roster turnover across the offseason, having two new faces who already know each other’s tendencies gives the Lakers a head start most of their other additions won’t have entering training camp.
